Bob,
We use a wide variety of printers, printing from the IBM I, through the use of IBM's User-defined driver program . . . : TSPLPRD.
All writers/outqs point to a Windows Print server.

Subject: Issues with new HP M404dn printer
Anyone here print from their IBMi to an HP M404 printer?
We've been using HP printers for many years here to print from our IBMi.
The usual setup is as a Remote Output Queue using Host Print Transform - works great.
The latest HP printer we purchased the HP M404 is a replacement for the M402.
HP no longer offers the M402, and the IBMi is having issues printing to the HP M402 printer.
When printing through a remote output queue to the new HP M404 printers we get an extra first page.
The extra first page has a capital "E" on the first line, first position, that's all and then the report prints as expected.
I opened a case with IBM and we did some debugging (TRCCCN/Wireshark).
IBM says the printer is printing a portion of the PCL command and the problem is with HP.
Called HP and they simply said the printer does not support the IBMi OS.
The M404 printer data sheet only mentions windows, MAC, Android operating systems.
The M402 list the same operating systems, no IBMi, yet it works as expected just fine.
IBM list the M402 on their web page "Information on printers from HP", but not the M404.
https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/information-printers-hp
I know IBM only publishes the "Information on Printers from Various Manufacturers" as a courtesy, and it can lag behind.
I was able to work around the problem with M404 by creating a printer device (CRTDEVPRT).
Haven't had to that for a very long time.
So, does anyone have any experience with an HP M404 printer and a remote output queue on their IBMi server?
Thank you,
Bob Schwartz
