Hello Don,

Is there any way to get files off the tape saved at V5R4 to the V5R3
system ?

Since IBM allows us to only RST from old to new and not vice versa: No.

In theory, it could be possible to extract the tape contents (I call them "sessions", as analogy to sessions on optical media) to stream files, edit the headers of the resulting files and you'd be fine. I've never done that, even if I thought about that possibility myself. Leif documented the *SAVF-innards somehow in his Book and I suspect that the tape contents are more or less save files, one per session.

The easiest way would be probably to attach compatible drive (temporarily) on a same-or-newer-version box and restore there.
