You're missing the fact that the default format is set by the DDS for the file - it is not related to the job as far a processing a date in an RPG program.

Is there another table or a column in either SYSCOLUMNS or SYSCOLUMN2 that does accurately represent the size of the column or do I have to calculate it?

Date Format of the job is known at runtime and could be retrieved from an external function, calcualting a length (without or with seperators) could be done by a join to a little table or by a function too and functions could be used in create view. Or am I missing something?
