You're missing the fact that the default format is set by the DDS for the file - it is not related to the job as far a processing a date in an RPG program.

Date Format of the job is known at runtime and could be retrieved from an external function, calcualting a length (without or with seperators) could be done by a join to a little table or by a function too and functions could be used in create view.
