to parse out the pieces from the string.

don't ask why... it is what it is. :(

The data appears to be signed zoned decimal. So, create a
character field 9 characters long and position a zoned field over the top
of it. Then just move the data to the character field and that will
automatically translate the overpunched sign to a negative number in the
zoned field that overlays it.
