is this for some sort of automated upgrade process?

how ive done this in the past is...

1. copy old to temporary table CREATE TABLE TEMPxxx SELECT * FROM
2. clear old table
3. modify old table ALTER TABLE
4. copy temp table data to modified table SELECT * FROM
