Why not convert the program instead

Subject: [EXTERNAL] Can you convert a variable length field to a fixed length field in a LF?
I have a situation where I have a key field that was defined by mistake as a variable length field. This is not a problem for ILE programs but it is not allowed for a OPM RPG program where we need to add a new file to the RPG code.
I am trying to see if its possible to convert the field to a fixed length field in a logical file?
Does anyone have some feedback?
TIA
Darryl Freinkel.
