Wait, you don't get to say you wouldn't use a function without a bunch of
extra code to make sure it doesn't fail, and that it isn't a deficiency in
the same thread.

BTW, I use SQL regularly. I am just asking for something that I can insert
into an expression that gives the least surprising answer, won't fail, is
easy to read, and easy to maintain.

A call to the SQL pre-compiler does not fit that requirement because I
cannot insert it into an expression.

%subst() does not provide the least surprising answer because it fails
where all other implementation of the same function in other languages do
not. Or, to avoid that failure I have to jump through hoops which make the
code harder to read and maintain.

Well I guess that's the difference between us, you would prefer to write
procedures to fix deficiencies in the compiler, I would prefer the
compiler
was improved.

In this case, it is not a deficiency in the compiler. See next
response.

BTW, the SQL substr() works as expected. The RPG %subst() does not. But
I
don't really want to call into the database just to have it do basic
string
handling.

This makes sense because SQL functions are database-centric while
RPG/LE functions are program-centric. Meaning: SQL functions are designed
with the understanding that they generally operate on data not yet
available to your program. RPG/LE functions are designed with the
understanding that they operate on data already available to your program.
Thus, when the data is already available to your program, you are
expected to be able to determine the characteristics of that data -- such
as its length. You can't know the length (or other characteristics) of
data you have not yet retrieved from the database.

Sincerely,

Dave Clark
