Yes, that's exactly the page I went to.  Nothing there led me to think that "DEFAULT" was a valid value, much less a special value.  And in fact, that seems like it might be a problem if you had a library named "DEFAULT" that you wanted to use as your schema.  But since what you've recommended works for my situation, I'm not going to pull on that thread any more.  :)

Hit Ctrl-F in your browser to find, and searched for *LIBL you would have noticed only one hit:

DEFAULT
The CURRENT SCHEMA is set to its initial value. The initial value for SQL naming is USER. The initial value for system naming is *LIBL.
