James, so how does an end user connect a http browser to port 8080? Do they have to specify 8080 on their URL? Or is it common practice to override http to listen on port 80?

Among other things, Tomcat comes "straight out of the box" set up to listen for HTTP on port 8080, and listen (if HTTPS is enabled) for HTTPS on port 8443.

And on a Linux system, you frequently have to override port security in order to allow Tomcat to be set up on 80 and/or 443.
