RE: sql identity column generate always (WHY HAVE TO RESET)

My first choice would be the identity column.
Failing that...
Pro of UDF: insert into mytable mysequdf(mytable), ...
Con of stored procedure is that you'd have to do extra coding instead.

If you want to store the value into a host variable (for propagating the key from a header file to a line file for example) both the udf and the stored procedure allow this
Values mysequdf(mytable) into :myhostvariable;
