That's what you actually get on PowerPc as an assembly opcode when you ask for a NO-OP (no operation). Takes time on the processor but does nothing. Sometimes when working with embedded hardware we used them for timing loops.

There were stories in the '80's and early '90s of software vendors embedding extra NO-OPs so they could remove them later in a future release as an enhancement. So today when a vendor tells me they increased the performance and gives no details, my mind goes straight to assembly NO-OP opcode removal :-)

Ok, I like technical humor but I admit that sometimes it can whoosh by. Don't ask me how long it took me to find the humor in "Mother's board, Dad's Unix".
Can you explain

Can't you just trust that they removed a couple of these embedded in some loops and that sped things up?

I was asked about this from my boss. Working closely with him I can guess he’s thinking stuff like:
How did they improve performance of SQL? Did they do something along the lines of:
- SQE vs CQE?
- SQL Plan cache?
- SQL optimizer?
- what?
So I did some research and I find ONE item listed in “Db2 for i - Performance Enhancements”. And that item is: “IASP vary on performance is improved”. Now this may be a big thing for some of you but we really don’t find it applicable to our operations.

Is there something else I am missing in how 7.4 improved the performance of SQL?
