Thanks for everyone's input.

What I ended doing (which serves my current situation) is to pass the workstation id from the session to my java program as a command line parameter.  If I need to start another session than that workstation id must be changed so it is unique.

This is likely not a permanent solution but for what I'm working on right now it does the trick.
