Unfortunately it doesn't look like DB2 has an TRY_CONVERT like Sql Server.

This worked for me. Not the most flexible but it works and can be altered in the future for you.

select storagedt, CASE WHEN REGEXP_LIKE(trim(TEST),'[\d][\d][\d][\d][-][\d][\d][-][\d][\d]') then dec(date(storagedt)) else 0 end as "as Decimal" from
mytable

That would only work for ISO character dates though.

Subject: Re: [EXT] Re: How can I detect an invalid date string in SQL?

Dave, works the same way! Eric, my data has invalid dates, Timestamp_format chokes on that. I have written my own UDF to validate the date string, then I can do this

case when IsValidDate(storagedt) = '1' then dec(date(storagedt)) else 0 end

Have you tried working with TIMESTAMP_FORMAT or TO_DATE?

In SQL, how can I detect a NULL returned by a function like DATE() or
DEC()?

This is my statement:

select storagedt, ifnull(dec(date(storagedt)), 0) as "as Decimal" from
mytable

What if you reversed that to the following?

dec(ifnull(date(storagedt), 0))

Sincerely,

Dave Clark
