This list is the best. One programmer running the old client has the excel add on and was trying to help a new programmer who did not have it. I think this is a much safer way as you are not performing a live link and changing data on the iSeries from the Excel spreadsheet which I have seen done in the past.

ACS has a new feature, Transfer from I, Output device - Active Excel Spreadsheet) which allows you to import directly into Excel, without the need of an Excel Plugin and/or ODBC driver.
