It's OK, but as a requirement there must be a hardware based HMC available
to those systems for just that eventuality and the very rare times the
managed system needs to be rebooted, (which of course requires all the HMC
partition to go down) and be available as a backup.

Networking has to be done correctly.

I understand the sentiment, and don't disagree, but there are benefits to
the approach.

True, but a poorly thought out switch thrown by an electrician just powered
off your data center. OOps.

You also forgot to set the HMC Partitions to automatically start with the
managed system, you big dummy.

Now what?

It's really what makes an HMC as a partition on the system of little to no
interest to me.

If you are not into the whole "cones of silence" concept where one feels a
need to have only a hardwire between the Power system management port and
the HMC you could have each systems HMC lpar cross manage the other Power
system. And, unless they all go down at once you should be covered.

Effectively eliminating ANY Intel based HMC.

I have one customer with multiple machines looking at keeping one hardware
based HMC that is only used when the managed system needs to restart, (very
rare nowadays) and is instead putting up a partition with the HMC in it on
each system to manage that system. The hardware HMC acts as a back up to
the HMC partition.

Interesting concept, and I'm not sure I buy it, but it will be fun to
implement.
