Thanks Jon
I had gone with the second way
It's a routine that is in use in a couple of other programs - that has had no problems
I had to incorporate this into a brand new program - and I made a promise to myself that I would create new programs in all free
Hence my question

Subject: [EXTERNAL] Re: converting to new free form

There are actually at least two ways to do it.

Dcl-ds newLineNumDS;
newLineNumTmp zoned(4) Pos(1);
newLineNumLin zoned(10) Pos(1);
End-ds;

Although I would probably code it this way because I don't like using absolute positions unless I have to.

Dcl-ds newLineNumDS;
newLineNumLin zoned(10);
newLineNumTmp zoned(4) Overlay(newLineNumLin);
End-ds;

Not quite sure why you are doing this though unless you want to put in a 10 digit field and take out the first four digits. It won't work the other way round 'cos the zone of the 4 digit number will mess-up the 10 digit one.

Hi everyone
Before I forget - we are on V7r3

I am drawing a blank on converting this code to free form

D newLineNumDS DS 10
D newLineNumTmp 4s 0 Overlay(newLineNumDS)
D newLineNumLin 10s 0 Overlay(newLineNumDS)

Any help would be GRATEFULLY accepted
