Hi Michael!
I understand your pain, I went through EXACTLY the same problem and with an equal computer...

Unfortunately its not possible.
You should either buy a 5250 terminal.
It is important to verify that your server has the twinax card, to connect the Twinax controller

The Twinax card that is on the server is one of these two:

* https://www.ebay.com/itm/Network-Card-PCI-Twinax-IBM-21H5497-21H5599-97H7760/132941821486?epid=1703957492&hash=item1ef3f3362e:g:w5UAAOSwmvpcWO5~

To each card, you need to use a specific 'twinax brick', to this:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/IBM-2720-9406-91H3942-PCI-Twinax-WAN-Controller/292852345941?epid=1800253707&hash=item442f5c2c55:g:x0kAAOSwHhFcCVXj

card, you need to use the 8 ports brick:

* https://www.ebay.com/itm/IBM-8-Port-Twinax-Cable-39J5129-Brand-New/302653654772?epid=1200569765&hash=item46779046f4:g:gxQAAOSwyTValUrA:rk:2:pf:0

To this card:

you need to use the 4 ports brick:

* https://www.ebay.com/itm/72X5645-IBM-4-port-twinax-workstation-cable-10-feet/261831085114?epid=1804073910&hash=item3cf6594c3a:g:itUAAOSw34FVGbfA:rk:1:pf:0

Look this video that i made: https://youtu.be/es-0uoU1GtM

You will need a twinax cable too...

Anyway, I recommend you to buy a Twinax Terminal, like this:

1. https://www.ebay.com/itm/IBM-InfoWindow-II-3488-V-Twinax-Terminal-Base-YConn-122-Keyboard-No-Monitor/252805465652?hash=item3adc614634:g:r8cAAOSwB-1Ywbf7:rk:23:pf:0
2. https://www.ebay.com/itm/IBM-3486-BGX-Twinax-Terminal-with-122-Keyboard/321942132158?hash=item4af53f15be:g:YRgAAOSwPgxVP6Ac:rk:4:pf:0

Hello everybody,
as a fan of oldschool servers I was happy to get a AS/400 9406-270 a
few days ago. Since I don't have any hardwareterminals I was glad to
read, that the green connector left to J11-Connector on the back could
be used with a Null-Modem-Cable to connect to a PC on usb. I bought
Startech FTDI USB to RS232 N-M-Adapter cable and run "Putty" on my
linux-PC (LinuxMint 19.1). The port /dev/ttyUSB0 is detected both by
the system and can be used in Putty. But there is just a black screen
with a green block cursor, but no interaction by keyboard possible, no
display on the screen during booting or any else.

So, how can I connect to the machine? And is the green serial-Port even
ready to work as serial input from a software-terminal like Putty?
Maybe I have to switch or adjust something on the machine itself, by
using to small display on the front?

Unfortunaly there was no documentation with the machine. So I even
don't know, if and in case of, which OS is installed.

I'm aware, my decision to get such a server was bit blue-eyed and
hasty, but I am willing to learn ...

Any recommendations on connect?

Best regards,
Micha
