Just to update this:

The hoster informed me that disk storage is virtual and uses a "very robust controller". They aren't SSDs, but are as good or better than then 15K drives we had in our Power5 520.

Also, our performance has shown a marked improvement for the last few days. They said they temporarily uncapped us to allow us to flex above the 960 CPW we were allocated. We're going to collect some performance data to analyze the situation further.

Thanks
Bob

I'm asking them the question of what type of disks they have us on. I'll update here when I have the answer.

Thanks
Bob

If they have you on 10k disks you won't be a happy camper. We reserve those for archive only lpars. Huge 1.5TB slow drives.

Keep in mind that these are probably not "physical" disk arms.
Since he is hosted I'm willing to bet the farm these are virtual disk arms.
6 is a fine number.

What you cannot find out, without asking your hosting provider, is whether or not they have you on SSD's, 15k disks or 10k disks.
