My immediate goal is to have a standalone Linux machine that I can manage myself.  With VirtualBox, I can try things and not have to take anyone's word for anything.  It's a much less intrusive and more flexible option than building an actual box or creating a Linux partition.

The longer term goal is to create an appliance that can act as a web portal to an enterprise server.  I'd like to build what would in effect be a self-replicating set of servers, any one of which can act as a front end for basic information even if the primary server is down.  Activity on any one would be replicated to all the others, with an option for a master to pull all activity and archive it.  A new appliance could register itself and pull the current data from the other servers.

Any similarities to systems or applications past or current are entirely coincidental.

Okay, folks, I'm beginning a dark, dangerous journey.? I just wanted to leave notice in case I disappear; a search party may be needed.? I've already got several VMs created.? And I could swear that new ones are popping into existence without my intervention.? But it just might be late night hallucinations.? Anyway, don't be surprised if you hear strange noises from this part of the world.
