As much as we'd all like to think that the reason IBM jacks their prices
and/or ends maintenance on certain hardware is to make newer hardware look
that much more attractive that is often not the reason. It has more to do
with parts availability. Once some billion dollar clean room switches
tooling over to newer cards or drives they no longer make the older ones.
It's not like some third party quarter panel for your older model car
being stamped out on some die by someone with a cigar in his mouth and a
beverage in his workspace.
