I found an OCR library on SourceForge, and a sample that runs fine on IBMi. I haven't yet gotten to customizing it for my use.
The project is Java OCR, and it's available on SourceForge and Maven. I found a sample app on Stack Overflow:

Has anyone done any OCR on TIF images?
I'll have a set of TIF images and I'll need to read a text value near a given location for each file. This will be part of an app and not a one-time thing.
