For internal disk I would not host it by VIOS. That alone will enhance
performance as vios does a crappy job of hosting internal disk. However
if you are trying to do it all with just the disk in the CEC, and if you
still need VIOS then I can see why one would use VIOS for internal disk.
Our IBM i disk is in expansion units. Disk in the CEC is reserved for
VIOS.

There was a recent discussion on this list about alternatives to vios
hosting Ethernet but we use vios.

Can't blame you for sticking to spinning disks, especially since it looks
like you like to hold on to hardware for awhile.

I guess production IBM i hosting development IBM i is ok. Normally one
uses a dedicated lpar for that but that's ok.

The only x86 version of HMC still being marketed is the vmware version.
Otherwise you buy a dedicated Power box to run HMC on. They make a
special 1U box just for this.
