In addition one can argue that authorization lists are faster than group
profiles for authority look up as well, so if there are millions of
authority look ups/hour that will make a difference.

I would recommend you set up authorization lists for this. The reason being
that when you use the EDTOBJAUT command to change authority, you will need
exclusive access to the object. For heavily used objects, that access may be
difficult to obtain. I have heard that, in the past, authorization lists
were slow, but since that time have been told that their performance has
improved. The last place I set up authority, I used authorization lists, and
they worked fine.
