If you don't see a password prompt maybe the server can't accept
User/Password authentication (a configuration thing).

Kevin, no... if I do the following steps, I never get prompted for a

1.) call qp2term
2.) sftp -vvv -o PreferredAuthentications=password -oport=22

shouldn't I be getting a prompt for password?

Your log seems to have clipped anything after a comma. eg. this line

debug2: we sent a password packet

should read

debug2: we sent a password packet, wait for a reply

I'm not sure whether the missing data is necessary, but it would be
nice
to have.

In any event, based on what is in the log it would appear that after
sending a password packet your remote server is not replying but
instead
just closing the connection. That seems odd to me. The server's log
might
shed some light on the problem, but of course you don't have access
to
that. You may have to contact the system owner and see if they can
figure
it out.

Can you connect to the server normally? It's just the expect script
which
fails?
