A question I might have is does color enhancing even show up in a putty
client?

Yes. I even manged to get 256 color mode working, though I had to copy some
terminfo entries from my home Linux PC and compile GNU screen from source to
get there.

Another one might be, why would I use vi, vim, etc, if I use RDi?

I don't know. For me, I've never used RDi, but I've been using vim on Linux
for a couple of decades or so. So I feel right at home with vim.

Is it difficult to use for stream files?

Stream files are easy with vim. And with creative use of a wrapper script
I can easily edit source physical file members with vim too.
