It uses "Field Procedures" to encrypt data.

After you know how it does it, I take it you then want to know "where" it
does it. Where should one first look? Obviously, the system catalogs. So
one starts out here:
https://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/ssw_ibm_i_73/db2/rbafzcatalog.htm

In the link "IBM i catalog tables and views" you can look for SYSFIELDS.
Which I found by doing a Ctrl-F (as in Find) in my browser and looking for
field procedure.
"The SYSFIELDS view contains one row for every column that has a field
procedure."

Knowledge Center, it's really that easy.

There's also a search function in Knowledge Center at the top right. In
there I looked for field procedure and got these results:
https://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/search/field%20procedure?scope=ssw_ibm_i_73
Great hits!
