Your network guys need to enable incoming telnet connections. I vaguely
remember that one good way to test connectivity to an email server was to
telnet to port 25 on that server.

Correction, I can 'kind of' get it to work ... but it just flashes the
screen & disconnects.
Arguably, this is a reasonable way to test that I can connect to the remote
system (if not the best).
