In looking up info on this, I just learned that apparently IBM have provided APIs for zipping and unzipping archives - QZipZip and QZipUnzip - this came out in 7.1 - there's a service program, QZIPUTIL, that has these procedures. The open source zlib library is used in these utilities.

There are options to tailor how the compression is done in tools other than jar - jar doesn't give you many options - we use it, as it is really easy and available, but I'll start using these new utilities, methinks.
