Interesting link.

Below is a clip from one of my joblogs, showing that savf are used.
Maybe it runs differently depending on the configuration.

According to this article, there are no save files involved. I looked into this previously when Rob had mentioned there were no save files used and I could swear that I had seen references to a Save File name in the job log. However, when I looked back as far as V5R4, the description was always the same. I have switched from using an AnyNet connection to an HPR connection. I seem to recall having seen that listed as the preferred method in a different article.

But I don't think it waits until the save is complete to that save file before the restore starts removing chunks from it.
This saves you:
1 - The full size of a normal save file
2 - Waiting until the save is complete before starting the restore.

For one or two programs you really shouldn't notice but for a full library...

For the full library restore we find using our DD 2500 VTL kicks butt over everything else.

SAVRSTOBJ or SAVRSTLIB

A save file, called OBCSAVF, is created in QTEMP.
The object(s) are saved to this savf.
The savf is sent to the other LPAR.
The object(s) are then restored from the savf.

I found the CMDSAVRST menu, which lists these commands. But the commands
themselves don't exist on the server. Are they part of a separately
licensed program?

Yes.
They are part of
5770SS1 22 ObjectConnect
and require SNADS to be configured.

The way they were explained to me is that they do NOT require the full
amount of space of a save file like you would do otherwise. It uses a
save api to take each chunk of save and pass it to the remote system and
it starts the restore.
