SELECT COUNT(*) FROM (SELECT FIELD FROM ... GROUP BY FIELD)

is the same syntactically as

SELECT COUNT(DISTINCT FIELD) FROM ...

I'm not sure the SQL engine treats them the same, but you should get the same results: a count of distinct values for FIELD.

(SELECT iucarton#
FROM ptiis00 inner join
ptiiu00 on isdid# = iudid#
and isseq# = iuseq#
and isline# = iuline#
WHERE isdid# = 16571777

group by iucarton#) as aa
