I've loaded VIOS from the V9 code (not CR1) and it's about as easy as it
gets.

Obviously you need to create the repository on the HMC, but then after
configuring the partition with all the right stuff, you activate the
partition and it will ask if this is a new install, say yes. It will then
allow you to create the base SEA and all the other things needed to install.

I suspect there isn't much documentation because it's gotten to the point
where you push the button, answer the prompts about where to create the
first SEA and it does the rest for you.

Very cool, as much as I dislike the new HMC code, that is one of the huge
selling points.

Then under virtual networking, you can create all the switches, SEAs, etc.
needed for networking. Again very cool.

I got a complex dual VIOS system with 8 IBM i partitions (IBM i all on SAN
and running on a P7, just moved them over to the P8) all built in a day
without touching the HMC command line. IBM partitions were down for about
an hour each, but only because the PowerVM version on the P7 would not
support live partition mobility.

Subject: VIOS installation on HMC V9

I'm working on installing VIOS on new 9009's, using new 7063-CR1 (V9) HMC's.
I haven't installed VIOS from scratch for several years (using classic HMC
interface). The last time I did it, there were some decent redbooks
explaining installation, but I don't see anything recent. The only
instructions I can find are in the KC:

https://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/en/POWER9/p9efd/p9efd_adding_vio
s.htm

Where the installation instructions consist of this nugget:

Create Virtual I/O Server and Install Image: Creates the VIOS by installing
the VIOS image. When you select this option, you are directed to the Install
VIOS Wizard where additional installation steps must be performed. In the
Install VIOS Wizard, you can install the VIOS software on the VIOS partition
that is created by using different installation methods. ?!?

Is there any better doc somewhere for doing this? Is the wizard the only
way to accomplish this on v9 hmc?

Dana
