IPMI is common to all Supermicro and some other hardware as well.

It is a web interface a bit like ASMI into the service processor of the server. From there you can power it up and down you can do firmware updates and such. Unlike ASMI you can create your own username and password. :-)

The best tools (IMHO) are the ability to use the keyboard and mouse and display remotely. SuperMicro also has installable tools that you can put in a list of servers with IPMI and from there access the console screen and power up an down easily.

Will you use it a lot? Probably not. But when you need it, it is solid gold.

Yes, that's where I initially saw the need for a network connection for IPMI. 'This connection is required to access the baseboard management controller (BMC) on the HMC'. But nowhere else in the HMC doc can I find much info on what it's really for. 'For more information, see Configuring the firmware IP address' link that points to 'Home >Linux on IBM Systems > . . . > Installing Linux on OPAL POWER8 systems' not really much help.

It's mentioned in the configuration worksheet as a requirement. How often you would have to access it I am not sure.

We are in the process of installing two new 7063's and the book says

7. Connect the Ethernet Intelligent Platform Management Interface

Not really knowing what this is for, is it really needed often?

Sure it has IPMI remote port on there, but is it supported? IBM told
us NEVER to use the remote console on X86 HMCs as it was not supported
so I'm guessing this will be the same.
