Agreed.

And the resaves are not just a catch up to the level of PTF's at some
point in time, well maybe they are. But you have to think of those people
starting out on a new system from scratch. They cannot take an I_BASE-A
disk and boot from that on a P8. They would need a much higher level.
But I do agree, that except in that case you should be ok with just newer
PTF's.

Here is another consideration. The OP is probably already past this, but
if you just HAVE to use DVD as an alternate IPL device it really helps if
that one is relatively current. One reason why I tend to get the latest
resave and keep it laying around.

That's the 'link loader' in some other messages. The link loader keeps
track of what PTFs you're applying and the order they get applied in. If
you're nervous about overloading the loader, you can break up your PTFs
into batches-- cume, then groups, then any strays you may have. Apply
each batch separately. But I've stuffed a lot into the machine at once,
and it takes some doing to fill it up!

AFAIK, the '(Re)spin/Resave level' refers to the version of the OS you
find on your distribution media CDs/DVDs. Every now and then IBM says
there are so many PTFs we'll just do another save of the complete OS and
use that as the distribution media. GREATLY reduces the number of PTFs
loaded from the cume. But if you have the latest cume + groups, you'll be
caught up just as if you had the latest 'respin.' See the link mentioned
