Interactive SQL ability without UPDATE or DELETE

Hello All,

Is there anyway to restrict an user to SELECT only statements on
interactive SQL screen (STRSQL) ?

Because of being Complacent with SOX, our profiles cannot do STRSQL &
company has forced us to go back to ages-old QUERY/400. This is when
fighting fires on a PRODUCTION system.

And i would like the benefit of STRSQL to run SELECTs and JOINs.
But must give up ability to UPDATE or DELETE or any kind of changes to
files.

What can our System admin do ?
This is what he is saying.
*"Due to object level security, we will not be able to issue STRSQL. Try
the query manager option to see if this fits your needs."*
