The astronomical sum though covers how many years? And that's the rub. As they age of course the odds of failure (or here wearout) increase. So I think the MMC is the right answer.

I remember having to report serial numbers of memory features and disk units as well. Pain in the backside!

I do remember having to report in every little thing on old hardware
(maybe back in S/36 days) and each part affected maintenance. And you're
right, some was so insignificant that it had to cost more to track the
paperwork.
