We route everything through message labs.

Okay, so the IBM i SMTP client is responsible for forwarding email to
message labs, and message labs is responsible for delivering them to
perhaps thousands of recipient endpoints. Just forwarding to message labs
is trivial in comparison. I don't think that the SMTP trace output will
help much during run-time. A trace is something that you might use to debug
an initial setup with message labs. But after it's working, what could
change? If message labs were to change its interface, say to require a
different protocol for encryption, or to reject an issuer's certificate,
then that new requirement would apply to all forwarded messages. The
interface would be broken. All messages would be rejected.
