Granted, although I had some issues on my MAC as well. I think it's more a
Google problem than anything else to be honest.

@Jim O -- of course the fundamental error here is using Microsoft "operating
systems" :) T-Bird and Firefox run flawlessly on real OSes ...

I agree with the Doc .... I have used it extensively for years with
nothing much to complain about. I have tons of saved email that I can
quickly search and it is easy to transfer between systems to keep a
backup site current. I did make the change that David suggested which
is very helpful.

You much have something wrong with your system. I have used T-Bird
FOR-EV-ER and while perfect it's not I have CRAP TONS of mail. I
connect to at least 7 mail accounts. I often have 6 to 10 windows open.
I use message filters extensively. I Restart T-Bird perhaps every two
weeks when I can feel it getting sluggish. I have MAYBE one crash
every two months.

I have to make a quick comment. I was not happy using Outlook and
went to Thunderbird. Years ago I used to be an avid Thunderbird
user. Agile moved from internal email to Google Mail. Thunderbird
was crashing at least once a day if not more after that. I went to
Outlook for several years.
Then it
became unstable and I went back to Thunderbird the 52 version
everyone is discussing. Again crashing now two to three times a
day. Back to Outlook
latest version and I'm not looking back. Now most of you know I'm
not
Microsoft's biggest cheerleader but in this case, it just works, and
while
not free, it's also well supported. Futhermore, it never had the
reply
list problems thunderbird had.
