Many of the system catalog table are really views or indexes over others.

Those which aren't you will see this in DSPFD
Allow read operation . . . . . . . . . . . : Yes
Allow write operation . . . . . . . . . . . : No
Allow update operation . . . . . . . . . . : ALWUPD *NO
Allow delete operation . . . . . . . . . . : ALWDLT *NO

Basically this means that only certain IBM internal APIs can update the
file.
Much like your history tables when you set up temporal tables. Although
they do allow you to purge off (delete) old history.
