There's a lot of considerations.

Disk encryption: Data at rest.
This is for those who fear that someone could physically scan the disk and
decipher the data. However any read of the disk by any file operations
automatically decrypts it.
Really do not see much use for this.
- Protects data transmission to and from the disk drive (important in a
SAN environment).
- Protects data transmission in the cross site mirroring environment (only
when the data being mirrored is on an encrypted independent disk pool).
- Protects data in the case of theft of the disk drive.

Tape encryption.
Useful for when tapes leave your physical location. Such as to places
like Iron Mountain. Now, if you're like us and had Iron Mountain drop off
a tape at the wrong address...

Transmission encryption. This normally involves the use of SSL.
