If you want to use SQL I'd suggest to convert the physical file first:
1. Generate the SQL Script for the physical file with IBM i Navigator's or
ACS' Generate_SQL functionality or with the GENERATE_SQL stored procedure.
2. Make sure it is a CREATE OR REPLACE TABLE ( and not a CREATE TABLE)
command
3. Add your column with varying length (where ever you want) to the script.
4. Run the SQL Script
... and the table is not only converted into SQL but also enhanced by the
additional column.
... and the most important thing: the data is still available
All dependent objects, such as logical files, views, indexes, triggers etc.
are adopted and do not need to
CREATE OR REPLACE TABLE is one of the most powerful features.
I just enhanced an old physical file in this way.
The hardest part was recompiling the RPG programs where the table is
accessed with native I/O.

If you do
ALTER TABLE ... it does "do it in the PF this time".

If yes, how do I do it?
Always done this is SQL but I need to do it in the PF this time.
