I'm glad you had a good experience, but it greatly depends on theit.
system, which controller card is in there and which disk it controls.
If it happens to be the card where the battery slides out the back,
(and the battery has not bloated so far that it can get out without
being manhandled) then your experience might happen, but I'll bet against
nicely.
We don't know from the OP which controller card it is, if it's even
accessible from the back of the unit or the shape of the batteries.
From the description I'm strongly guessing it's an older card (which
has the batteries on the card not in the little bay at the back) so
the card must be removed to change it out.
The CE would not require a console if the batteries could be replaced
concurrently. Besides that it's really bad practice to have a system
without a console anyway so bite the bullet and get it done.

That disagrees with my experience six days ago.

Jerry:
The CE needs to take the system to a restricted state, and will most
likely power down the system, that's the reason for needing the
console. That's to be sure the cache is cleared before the batteries
are changed. Besides that I'll bet that card controls all the DASD
(or at least the load source) so, when the card is pulled to change
the battery, the system will go down hard anyway if it's not brought down
on
Yes, a console is a requirement.
DEGRADED most likely means the cache is turned off due to the days count
the batteries. System runs but very slowly.questions.
