For a shop with a single Power system I sure wouldn't run it on a virtual
lpar on that same Power system. Perhaps I just need enlightening though.

You left a lot off though:
- Age and model of your current HMC.
- Current Power system and plans for replacing that.
- Whether or not you already have some sort of VMWare environment or have
plans to do so in the foreseeable future.

In general, if your HMC is upgradeable to be able to support your next
Power system (which I think you plan on having within a year) then I would
just stick with that. Unless your management only allows you to spend
money on any Power equipment every 10+ years. Which, with the hardware
and the release you're currently running is not out of the realm of
possibility. Or, if the maintenance is going bonkers. Or if it will not
support the current release of HMC.

We upgraded both of our HMC's when the old models would not support Power
8's. But that was before the VMWare option came out.
