One thing we encountered in upgrading is that vendor-supplied systems
sometimes had hidden timing dependencies. With the new platform, jobs would
get hung on locks that didn't occur on the slower platform.

This happened to us! After we upgraded from an iSeries 5 to the Power 8 the
system was so fast that everyone was resubmitting jobs! For example, a
monthly inventory update used to take over an hour on the old system. The
Power 8 completed the job in less than 5 minutes. Yes, it really is a
thing!

That's good news Donna.
The biggest user problem we've had with some of our upgrades were users
submitting jobs several times because it finished so fast they could no
longer find it active. Yes, this is really a thing.

We had our VAR do everything and it was fantastic!
We did a couple of full system saves from the i5. They lent us an LTO 5
external drive to do the restores.
We started on a Friday evening and were up and running Monday morning with
no hitch.
The only thing our users complained about was not having the time to get
their coffee. The system was running 60% faster and their jobs were
completing before they could get out of their chairs!

Hi All,

I have approval to upgrade to a Power 8 from an i5.

I am currently on 7.1 TR11 with the plans to take over as is.
Backing up to a LTO 3 and using LTO 5 to restore.

Once on new box I will update to 7.3 in the following month or so.

Any things is should ensure are done on the i5 first?
