In an HA shop you may have a few unique names. For example, GDISYS1 may
generally be your source machine and GDISYS2 may generally be your target
machine. But the users just connect to GDISYS. And, depending on who is
primary at the time may be sent to one or the other (normally through a
DNS change).

There's even an obscure option in ADDRDBDIRE called "Application requester
driver". I think this is what people like Dieter Bender use to allow you
to simply connect to other databases like SQL Server.
