Nathan, Rob:

There is always the GET_DIAGNOSTICS statement. There is a *very* long list
of thins that can be queried realtive to a just executed SQL statement: The
constraint name (if in error) is, IIRC, one of them.

Luis

Nothing provides such features. Even traditional RPG. You had to code
for it. Even before any of these type of constraints.

Now, you have to be more thorough on your writes to check the error codes
and error messages. Let's look at CPF502F for example. If you get that
then it is the programmers job to see if parameter &16 is 'MycolIsNotYorN'
and decide if the user can determine the message from the constraint name
or present a prettier message and position the cursor on the correct
position and all that jack.

How did the parent know to chain out to the child on which column to
ensure that there was no match and therefore it would be safe to remove
this parent row?

My problem with DB defined RI constraints is with the generic
non-descriptive error messages, and that the error handling doesn't
provide
for cursor positioning and highlighting on relevant columns.

I may be missing something. For shops that implement DB defined RI
constraints, how do they handle user interface requirements (i.e.
friendly,
meaningful error messages, cursor positioning on relevant columns, and
highlighting)?
