Products like DD originally got their roots from early modem technologies
where comm drops were quite common, and on a long file transfer, it was
enough to bring you to tears to have to start over from the beginning.
These could restart from a known point.
Restart is often still a part of their function. Other parts may be
multithreading the transmission to really try to get it over much faster.
Hence the reason why many people, when they drop back to http
transmission, decry the slowness.
Java version control seems to be often the biggest issue. Java versions
on the client, server, and those supported by any browsers, etc.
IDK enough about web development to know whether or not some of the
performance enhancements of something like DD can be done in a web browser
without involving some java of some kind.
