Here's a tip from my CPA: Join a group (or organize your own) that does
home repair/building projects on a charity basis. Write off the cost of
those tools on your tax return.

The IRS has never complained, and more importantly, She Who Must Be Obeyed
has never complained.

OTOH my budget has been so tight for so long I don't even own a decent
cordless drill. I lug around a cable and use that. On the plus side, the
battery never dies or needs replacement.
My cordless drill has a crank.
