So would I change in my connect string to log in from the rpg?

I think that's your problem right there. I'd wager SSMS won't let you log in with your Windows credentials if you select "SQL Server Authentication".
I always use dedicated SQL Server users for JDBC from IBMi.

I'm logging into SSMS with server name\instance, authentication set to Windows Authentication, and my user name - no password.
