"SCM is the ONLY reason"? Hmmm...

What if you wanted to be able to share your code with people? For example, you taught a technique, and wanted to share an example with other people. Your RPG could is masterful, but won't compile without the database table being defined. Wouldn't you want to be able to send the "create table" statement? Though, I suppose you could ask the system to re-generate the DDL code. IMHO, the stuff it generates isn't as nice looking as a human-created one, though :-)

Or, a different argument... why does an SCM need the code when it can generate the code from the table? Wouldn't the SCM work better if it grabbed the info from the table itself so you don't have to worry about source/object differences? By retrieving it , it could still keep track of what changes were made and when, etc.
