I changed the authority to the default authority for profiles, *PUBLIC *EXCLUDE. No loss of functionality resulted, but we're seeing a number of authority failures in the audit logs.

As a former employee of a software vendor, I can muddy the water for
you. It's possible that the package tries to perform action X 'the easy
way', monitors for failure, and then tries it 'the hard way'. In this
scenario, a failure would get trapped (and logged). This would trigger
the 'try it a different way' logic, which would succeed (and thus not
throw an AF).

My personal experience is with cross-version support: I'd write code
that uses a very recent API, and if that fell over, use a 'print and
scan the spooled file' approach.
